Mission Impossible in Ethiopian Millennium

Barren Civil Communication before ZTE comes

Ethiopia, a great nation with 3,000-year history, is the economic and political center of Africa. On 12th Sep. 2007, a brand new start, their millennium – 1 Meskerem 2000 was coming. Thousands of visitors all over the world came here for this celebration to reflect the past and look forward to the future.

The Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC) just sparked her inspiration six month before the Millennium Celebration – ETC wanted to introduce a vendor, who can help her improve the communication conditions during the festival, even by using some emergency measures.

Challenge the ‘Mission Impossible’

ZTE finally stood out from other competitors and won this project to swap/expand existing 800,000 lines GSM 800/1900 network with 2 million lines GSM/UMTS network before the celebration. Within less than 5 months for such a huge “Turn-Key” project, it is really a ‘Mission Impossible’.

Distributed Base Station System for a Fast Deployment

ETC adopts hundreds of mature applied Distributed Base station System (DBS) for the coverage and provides the HSDPA service in the government buildings, offices, cafés and hotels. In these places, to keep the buildings’ original look is a prime problem to be considered.

DBS can be installed in a completed shelter; the Base Band processing Unit is just screwed on the wall, plugged with fiber and connected to the remote deposited Radio Unit. The Remote Radio Unit is hidden under the roof and totally no impact on the building’s appearance.

ZTE successfully accomplished this huge ‘Turn-Key’ project with amazing speed –only 40 days!

High Traffic Impacts

During the celebration night and following morning, the network traffic was out of consideration to reach 9,000 ~ 14,000 Erlang per hour. Even in that severe condition, each single network element was still working properly; the live measured network KPIs with 109 test items were also having a 32% significant improvement, much better than that before swapping.

HSPA Hot Spots

Besides the voice service, Ethiopian can also experience the most advanced High Speed Packet Access service. In each hot spot, it provides 5.76Mbps/cell throughput for a convenient access to the Internet.

After this unprecedented successful cooperation, ETC decided to choose ZTE as their Exclusive Supplier for the further network expansion/evolution.
