ZTE Optical Fiber Transmission System for Pacifictel in Ecudor
In December 2001, ZTE signed a big contract with PACIFICTEL, a state telecom operator responsible for services in coastal regions. ZTE got the opportunity to construct the first national optical transmission backbone network in Ecuador. It is one of the biggest operators in Ecuador, and has the experience of telecommunication service for many years. It is headquartered in the biggest city of Ecuador -Guayaquil.
This optical transmission network will cover all the regional, national and international traffic for the customer, and support integrated services with high reliability and security.
Based on years of R&D experiences, ZTE Corporation has the ability to provide total solutions for transmission network with her optical transmission products branded by Unitrans.
The optical fiber cable and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) transmission system are deployed in this project. The backbone will be interconnected with the Peru and the undersea cable systems of Pan-American, Atlantis, Americas and Columbus.
The fiber optic trunk network is made up of two routes: the north ring Guayaquil Manta - Quito and the south ring Guayaquil - Machala - Huaquillas. The two rings are interconnected in Guayaquil. The total length is more than 1000 Km.

ADM-16 will be installed in the trunk rings and ADM-4 and ADM-1 will be installed in the sub-chains. The SDH equipment will be installed with capacity of adding/dropping E1, E3 and other tributaries. And this network will be able to carry multimedia traffic, including voice, data and image signals.
The distance between some stations is very long, so the Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) has been used to realize the long distance transmission.
The Bi-Directional Multiplexing Section Protection (BDMSP) has been implemented for the ring. So the network has an automatic protection against failures or break of the fibers.
For the management system, the master/slave station has been implemented. Normally, the slave center only has the right to monitor other than to control, while the master center is in charge of the whole network. In case of the breakdown of the master center, the slave center would take its place and has the highest priority.
The system has sufficient flexibility in the network upgrading. The system will allow the possibility of increasing capacity or integrating new positions in any node of ADM (Add/Drop Multiplexer). All the ADM-4 equipment could be smoothly upgraded to ADM-16 with the change of only optical line interface and the ADM-1 could be smoothly upgraded to ADM-4. And the system is designed in this way so that they can be upgraded in the future by virtue of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, or through the new 10Gbps, SDH (STM-64), using the same fiber optic cable acquired in the process.
