Sweet Little Secretary ZTE’s X70

2010-08-10

When I learnt that I would be working far away from home, my friends insisted on throwing me a farewell party. At the end of the party, they handed me a nicely wrapped box and said, “This will surely be useful to you. It will help you a lot over there.” I accepted the present graciously because of their insistence. It was, of course, ZTE’s X70—what I later called my “sweet little secretary” and which accompanied me all the way to Chongqing city, in China’s southeast.

First Taste
I am not a big gadget fan, but I couldn’t help but smile wryly when I unpacked my X70. I was a little concerned that such a business-oriented product would be too extravagant for me. But when I really got to know it, I felt a greater affinity with the phone than I first expected. The black-colored casing and generously sized touchscreen aroused a great deal of interest from my new colleagues, which helped me integrate quickly into my new work environment.

As a newcomer to the company, I devoted myself to work. To get on top of my job as soon as possible, I sent and received e-mails via the handset and perused Word documents while waiting for the light rail. In my free time, I peered out the window for a break—shuttling through this vibrant city made me feel energetic again.

Going Deeper
Errors and omissions are sometimes an inevitable part of a busy lifestyle. So the X70’s calendar with reminder messages naturally became an indispensable tool.  This feature could have caused frustration if every time you wanted to use it you had to scroll through menu selections. However, the customizable home screen plays a key role here. You can move to four customizable home screens by swiping your finger across the 3.2-inch main screen. These home screens can be filled with contacts and application shortcuts as desired. In addition, you can put extensible applications, games, video, and music into corresponding home screens.

Of course, the reason I called it my “sweet secretary” was not just because it could prompt me with timely reminders, but also because it could update me with snippets of new information. Its Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional System and built-in Internet Explorer Mobile browser provides the best possible Internet surfing experience. With a built-in gravity sensor, the X70 automatically adjusts the webpage display according to the angle of the phone. The X70 also offers handwriting recognition and full virtual Qwerty keyboard input options that allows effortless browsing of the Internet.

Relishing

Now that I am used to working in a new environment, there is still much to learn about this beautiful mountain city. On weekends, navigating through the city can be challenging because I have difficulty finding my way. Fortunately, the X70 is embedded with digital maps.

Complemented by an A-GPS network, the X70 has practical functions like locating yourself and map enquiry. You can even obtain information about nearby restaurants, hotels, entertainment, and health facilities.  Guided by digital maps, my friend and I met for an authentic Chongqing-style hot pot and located some of Chongqing’s famous hot and sour rice noodles. The X70’s 5-megapixel camera was on hand to capture these unforgettable moments. After editing the photos using built-in tools, I uploaded the pictures to my microblog. That night, many of my hometown friends sent messages and requested to see more wonderful photos.

Little by little, I found that I had become increasingly dependent on this “sweet small secretary”, both in work and in life. I will always miss my far-away friends who gave me ZTE’s X70. I hope they are as happy as me.
