Periodic network evaluation and optimization during and after construction of 3G networks can not only enhance the security and reliability of transmission networks and 3G communication services, but also help operators improve the usage of resources and network management efficiency, reduce investment and operation and maintenance costs, and strengthen their profitability.

Optical transmission networks are main bearer networks of communications services, so their efficiency and stability are critical for the entire communications network. After years of network expansion and modification, transmission networks have grown into large and larger scales, posing increasing difficulties on maintenance and exposing numerous problems, such as hazards to the network security in unreasonable topology, unprotected key nodes and key boards, cross-waste of resources due to excessive idle channels and improper circuit planning, failure of early 2G transmission networks to support for new services and functions, frequently occurring bottlenecks in EEC routing, tardy reposting of network management data, etc. These problems have even gone beyond the control of maintenance personnel in certain respects.

Network data collection, evaluation and analysis, optimization design, optimization implementation are three key nodes of the entire process.

(1) Network data collection, evaluation and analysis

Network data collection and evolution form the basis of transmission network optimization. Before transmission network optimization, it is important to collect various data about the transmission network, including time slot distribution, service configuration (detailed to the level of individual boards and ports), network topology, conditions of line and channel resources, software and hardware versions of equipment and individual boards, network management configuration and versions, ECC definition and protection, equipment working conditions, conditions of spare parts, etc. The data described above are collected and used to produce a formatted document depicting the current network and lay the foundation of successful optimization.

To ensure successful optimization of transmission networks, ZTE has developed a complete evaluation system of optical transmission networks for customers to carryout thorough analysis of collected data as shown in Figure 1. The evaluation system has been developed by fully taking account of the actual construction and maintenance conditions of the optical networks around the world. It covers ten fields, such as resources, network security, and networking and structure, providing dozens of indicators which are used to quantify and objectively reflect the statistics, for understanding the loads and capacity, capacity efficiency, security levels, and management and maintenance conditions of networks, identifying problems, and conduct an all-around evaluation of customers’ networks.

(2) Optimization design

ZTE is home of a leading batch of skilled experts in transmission network optimization and offers a complete set processes of design and audit. Systematic findings from network evaluation serve as the basis for developing the most suitable network optimization solutions tailored for customers to address the specific problems identified during the evaluation and the actual conditions of the current networks.
