Overview

As one of the three major Third Generation mobile communication standards, TD-SCDMA meets the IMT-2000 basic requirements. It adopts TDD mode, needs single frequency, and FDMA/TDMA/CDMA/SDMA combined multiple access modes. Using a 1.28 Mcps chip rate, each carrier has a bandwidth of 1.6 MHz. In addition, adoption of advanced technologies such as smart antennas, joint detection, uplink synchronization, software radio, baton handover, and Dynamic Channel Allocation (DCA), helps making TD-SCDMA one of the most advanced mobile communication systems in the world.

TD-SCDMA has many technical features, including high spectrum utilization, support for asymmetrical data service, simple network planning, large system capacity and low overall cost. TD-SCDMA can be used to build independent networks with high-performance, wide coverage and low cost; providing powerful and differentiated competency and fast networking capability to meet operators' needs.

From 2004 to the end of 2006, TD-SCDMA has undergone three stages of testing: MTNet field test, industrialization field test and large scale application test. Major equipment manufacturers and six major Chinese operators have all participated in this full range of testing. These strict and comprehensive tests on TD-SCDMA radio subsystems, network performance, key technologies, terminals and interoperability combines to show that TD-SCDMA systems are capable of wide commercial application.

In April 2007, TD-SCDMA found large-scale commercial application network via a bidding process held in ten major Chinese cities. These cities include Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Tianjing, Qinhuangdao, Qingdao, Baoding, Xiamen and Shenzhen. Network scale reaches nearly 100,000 carrier-sectors for the complete set of solutions covering UTRAN equipment, core network equipment, service platform, terminal, and NMS; marking a milestone in the history of TD-SCDMA standards.

By the end of July 2006, a total number of 117 TDD licenses have been awarded globally. As one of the international 3G standards, TD-SCDMA is the only 3G standard capable of wide commercial application as a UMTS TDD technology. Compared with other 3G systems, TD-SCDMA has advanced unique technical features as it provides operators with powerful differentiated competitiveness. As the growth of the TD-SCDMA industry continues at a high rate, it is convinced that TD-SCDMA will not only find wide application in China, but also have a promising future in the world.

Relying on rich experience in R&D and market application, as well as years of in-depth exploration and research, ZTE has successfully provided end-to-end integrated solutions covering various levels of TD-SCDMA network, including service platform, core network, radio network, terminal and network planning/optimization. In particular, ZTE’s leading series base station products fully utilize the technical characteristics of TD-SCDMA to implement seamless and high-quality 3G coverage by building cost-effective, rapid and flexible TD-SCDMA networks
