Save more than 35% TCO while ensuring stable and reliable power supply, this is not a miracle.
Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), Malaysia’s leading integrated information and communications group, offers a comprehensive range of communication services and solutions in broadband, data and fixed-line. As a market leader in the broadband and fixed-line businesses, it owns the largest ISP in the country and national optical networks. It is one of the most influential operators in Southeast Asia.
Challenge for TM
The fierce competition from local wireless telecommunication business caused steep drop of fixed voice business in Malaysia. Exploring new service to gain more data service market share becomes a premier in business consideration. As a result, TM started NGN construction in year 2006. On one hand, low TCO is a must to fight in the competition and to secure its leadership in Malaysia telecom market. On the other hand, in order to support the government's ICT agenda, Malaysia's ICT 5-Year Roadmap of observing and adhering to the global technology trend, high reliability, energy efficient and outstanding performance are required. Power supply, as the key network infrastructure equipment, has to meet all these goals. Conflict between lower cost and better performance turns out to be the greatest challenge, as it always is.
ZTE Solution
Tender for power product was launched by TM in March 2006. ZTE Corporation stood out from more than 20 bidders by its state-of-the-art technology and cost advantage. This alone did not turn on all green lights on the way. At the initial stage, some experts in TM questioned ZTE power products and solution out of traditional impression for “Made in China”. ZTE Corporation made immediate response by organizing technical experts to communicate with TM. Based on the in-depth understanding and insight of TM’s needs from these communications, ZTE analyzed and compared various design concepts and solutions, which was highly recognized by TM.
Furthermore, ZTE Corporation customized its products and solutions for TM’s actual situation, including but not limited to, modifying cabling to save more space and make the maintenance easier, improving CSU to enhance the accuracy of monitoring which contributes to high stability; optimizing surge protection system to ensure application in lightening-intensive environment. The concept of dual AC inputs in parallel for backup also came true through mutual effort. All these delivered satisfying result in the 5-month test by TM in Malaysia. In year 2007, TM awarded official contract to ZTE. ZTE would power more than 1500 sites, which is 70% of the NGN project. ZTE proved itself as a professional partner in telecom power supply: no lightening failure happened during operation until now. Saving in CAPEX alone is more than 35%, which greatly sharpens TM’s edge in the competition.
Second cooperation
Malaysia government is committed to build up national broadband network in 5 years. TM launched HSBB (high speed broadband) project with 5 sub-projects in August 2008. An independent tender for power product was held to meet demands for power from existing and future networks. Higher requirements for power supply have been set. ZTE fully utilized the successful experience from previous cooperation and its weapon of fast response and customization. TM awarded letter of intention to ZTE Corporation after an all-around technical and commercial assessment which lasted for 3 and half months. In February 2009, ZTE passed the test monitored by experts from TM in Shenzhen, China and gained high recognition. Organizer of this test, expressed strong confidence in the cooperation, “Frankly speaking, ZTE rectifier system is the best (we tested), thank you very much for your support.”
Milestones
The power supply partnership with Telekom Malaysia not only shows ZTE's strong commitment in establishing strategic collaboration with international high-end providers, but also the dedication (uncompromising dedication to improve the value of Made in China brand and status in International level.
