High-valued network helps take preemptive opportunities in competition---Amcom IP Over DWDM network

Although a host of carrier licenses had been issued since 1997 when Australian communications market was opened to full competition, Telstra and SingTel Optus remain the fixed-line sector’s most powerful players, competing in the field of broadband access. Current mobile communications markets are occupied by Telstra, Optus Mobile and Vodafone, with new entrant Hutchison gaining little share.

Amcom is an industry-leading Australian owned telecommunications carrier, providing low cost broadband services with large market share. Amcom has deployed over 1072km of optical transmission networks in Western Australia, Southern Australia and Northern Australia to deliver broadband data and voice services. Amcom takes an important role in Australia market.

Advanced design philosophy creating high-valued transmission network

Huge demands for IP data services necessitate Amcom networks’ ability to transmit vast data services. Original Amcom networks were SDH networks with bandwidth lower than 10G, far from accommodating their development requirements. Amcom is concerning to build an efficient transmission network to implement service transmission and dispatch. Targeting its current service requirements, while taking into account the future development trend, ZTE Corporation supplied Amcom with its cutting-edge IP over DWDM solution in 2007. In the project, ZXMP M800, ZTE’s high-end WDM equipment, served as transmission backbone layer equipment to connect with data equipment and deliver IP solution, with networking diagram shown in Fig. 1.

With advanced ROADM technology, ZXMP M800 supports chain, ring, mesh, multi-ring topological structures, and enables remote add/drop of any wavelengths via NM to establish end-to-end wavelength connections. GSS (General Service Switch Platform) allows for flexible sub-wavelength-level service dispatch, thus realizing X-ADM for a variety of data services. GSS-based electrical layer cross-connect dispatch supports path 1+1, 1:N protection and path shared protection at sub-wavelength level.

With the development of data services and IP-based evolution, Amcom’s transmission networks in operation are suffering from escalating bandwidth pressure. ZXMP M800 DWDM can well address the demands for high bandwidth. With high transmission capacity of 40×10G, it has the ability to upgrade to 800G, or even 1600G. DWDM transmission platform results in optical fiber resource saving, greatly simplified data network, and vastly improved optical fiber utilization.

ZTE IP over DWDM solution provides switch board for large-granule transmission, enabling access of versatile large-granular services like GE, 10GE, 2.5G POS, 10GPOS, 10GE, and catering to the service transmission requirements in Amcom networks. The DWDM transmission network built by ZTE Corporation offers multiple protection modes, including optical multiplex section 1+1/1:1 protection, optical channel 1+1/1:1/1:N protection, 2-fiber bidirectional optical multiplex section shared protection ring (OMS-SPRing), 2-fiber optical channel shared protection ring (OCh-SPRing) and sub-wavelength protection. The perfect protection functionality ensures security and stability of Amcom network, gaining high praise from the carrier.

ZTE adopts patented technique to realize channel shared protection, resulting in improved wavelength utilization and reduced CAPEX in initial and future capacity expansion. With interleaver and OBM techniques, the network has the ability to upgrade from 40 wavelengths to 80/160 wavelengths, thus saving initial investment cost and offering efficient convergence functions targeting GE, STM-4/16 services.

ZTE’s flat network design effectively eliminates undesirable routers and switches, leading to lowered network construction cost, reduced interworking of equipment, and vastly decreased network failure points, enabling unified gateway and cutting equipment maintenance cost.

Outstanding solution winning prestigious ATUG award

Since completion of the project, the network has been in normal operation, owing to outstanding equipment performance. Success operation of the network delivers significant growth for Amcom services, with data services experiencing rapid development. At present, with only 3, 4 wavelengths in use, the network features tremendous capacity expansion space, fostering huge service growth for Amcom.

ZTE’s excellent solution was highly approved and praised by Amcom, while winning awards by several organizations in Australia for the advanced and stable network and its contribution to future services.

ZTE IP over DWDM solution designed for Amcom won ATUG (Australian Telecommunication Users Group) 2007 Award for Best Communications Solution, and was the Nominee for 17th WAITTA (Western Australian Information Technology and Telecommunications Awards) 2007 Telecommunications Category Winner.
